04-16-2009 safety in numbers
On the 12th, I mentioned the ducklings that fall prey to the Barred owls (Strix varia helveola). There are dozens of Mallard breeding pairs along the river with an average brood of about 4 or 5, which will maintain a very healthy population despite the owls. The river has always been a family oriented environment, this holds true to the wildlife as well. These little ones should fledge in about six more weeks.
