08-04-2009 old signs

A wall across from the San Antonio Museum of Art. The piece is called “old signs”

This piece of art got me to thinking about old signs again. I encounter an abundance of them once I become “aware” of them.

Something… about the moTEL sign displayed below reminds me of the Bakersfield, Ca. locality and the music genre that flourished there. Artists such as ex-con Merle Haggard, Wanda Jackson, Buck Owens with Don Rich and Dwight Yoakam. It evokes in me a sense of a driving, churning western swing-derived rhythm born of all nite beer joints and long hours on the road between shows….

  1. Great piece of art with old signs! and your motel sign capture is very nice. Like the evening light and the composition.

  2. That first image is wonderful. Love the message it conveys..and that all of the words are created out of old signage.

  3. excellent…particularly like the motel sign.

  4. An interesting composite art piece. The motel sign is attractive in the waning light.
The inducing special features and their order on the sign is fascinating. Strange to see television and phones played up as a feature.

  5. I love these old motel signs. They have character.
