I can see that the principles are the same as a modern heater, but far less efficient. Something i found interesting was the exterior design. This doesn’t appear to be an item that would be hidden away in a closet, but perhaps located in the open. It must have kicked out a great deal of heat, so it may also have doubled as an space heater as well.

A fine series of this ancient water heater. I certainly enjoyed reading this warnings and directions for relighting this device. I suspect a user would be advised to follow the directions exactly!

When I was a kid, about 5, my parents bought their first house, and it had a water heater like this in the basement. It was no longer hooked up.
