      Although this is at the bottom of a canyon, it is a wonderful example of how people lived in the area. The Texas Plains are virtually devoid of timber, so traditional home building was out of the question until the railroads arrived. Can you imagine how tough it was to eek out a living, and the conditions endured to settle the territory? The region receives only about 16 inches of rain annually, with unbearable cold and an ever present wind, hostile natives (Indians), all of which surely took it’s toll on the first settlers.
